Indian Hatchet Birthday Signature Block

Our 30's Mini Group made signature blocks for our member's birthdays.  Thanks, Mona, for these directions.  Blocks are 5 1/2" unfinished.
For each block:

Cut (1) - 3 ½ " square (muslin fabric)

Cut (2) - 2 ½" squares (30's print)

Don't cut the following if you are planning on doing the easy strip piecing.
Cut (4) - 1 1/2" squares (30's print)

Cut (4) - 1 ½" x 3 ½" rectangles (contrasting or coordinating 30's print)
(Or see the easy strip piece method below)

Take the 2 ½" squares of 30's print and draw a line accross.
Take the 3 ½" square of muslin and place the 2 ½" squares of 30's print on opposite corners. Stitch across the middle of the 30's print diagonally and fold back.
 Do this on both pieces.
Trim to 1/4" seam. Press to the darker fabric.

Take the 2 rectangles and stitch one on each side of the square. Press to the rectangles.

 Easy strip piecing method.
Cut (2) pieces of 30's fabric 1 ½" by whatever length you want (this will be the same fabric that you cut your 2 ½" squares from).

Cut (1) piece of contrasting or coordinating 30's fabric 3 ½ " by the same length you cut the 1 ½" pieces.

Sew the 1 ½" lengths to the 3 ½" piece, one on each long side. Press to the center fabric.

Now you can cut this into 1 ½" wide pieces. You have just saved yourself some time by strip piecing and cutting instead of cutting and sewing the 1 ½" squares to the 3 ½" rectangles.

These are some of the blocks I recieved.  They are so cute!  I am planning on making a wall hanging for my sewing room.
